Love Earth, Watercolour Thumbnail Sketch

I had a cup of tea near the trees, my special place to chill out. It's a place where I saw children had some play in summer. We had no idea why the local contractors cut down a huge blossom that was curved over a little stream. In spring it becomes a spectacular blossom bridge. I noted that walkers were stopping to look at the missing blossom. They were simply puzzled. "Who on earth could have done that?" I was shocked myself then I tried to calm down by the thought that the contractors merely tried to tidy it up. I could see they realised they had made a mistake. It was not what people wanted so they decided to leave the trunk of the tree behind for the kids to play with! It was so sad. It took about fifty years to have a tree of the same scale. It was part of local memory, hence not replaceable! This incident showed appreciation of natural beauty was important. On half a page of my A5 sketch book, with a pencil I thought of making a note of it. Half way I chose an easier approach by replacing pencil with a brush. The paper buckled with water so I let it dried and finished the drink, folded the sketch book and forgot about it.

This morning still in bed, I found the book on the floor. Reaching to it and I opened it and here it is. The paper was flat, my little scene. My eyes kept looking at it, just a 4"x 6" sketch. It is one of the smallest I've done. I heard children still playing on the tree.. making friends .. and growing up.. I see so much in this little piece of paper .. I think I've just been getting caught in the act.. I love earth! :-)

Roadside Sketch, NZ, Watercolour Landscape

I found this little sketch in a pile of paper.  A little piece of paper brought back huge memories.  It was a rare chance that I traveled through country side on a rugged curly road.   The sketch was done during a stop over at the road side for a stretch.  Looking around I was surrounded with wonderful natural elements in deep autumn colours. There are so much inspirations.  Couldn't help but pulled out my watercolour pochade and made a note on this poor piece of paper..  I wished I could have had just painted it.

Only a short few minutes but I could understand why Paul Cezanne chose to live in Aix en Provence instead of Paris.  I wish the car could stopped every few minutes for me to record the scenes.  I love to be in a rugged country sides.  I also know there's possibilities that I could not resist the temptation to spend whole day picnicking and painting and I might not remember to go home!  I knew what happened to Cezanne when the place he grew up became part of him.  His art just made the link unbreakable and timeless.

Home is actually where the heart is.  I was very reluctant to get back in the car after having a moment to absorb and say good bye!

Painting Mountain Stream of Southern Alp, NZ

It was a beautiful day.  I decided to be outdoor whole day painting.  I love to paint nature using the natural colours and balance.  I absorb the natural balance by breathe, feel and imagine the interactive nature.
The painting brought back my memory of the moment I stood and breathed in the air and be taken by the beauty of the place.  Every time I look at the painting I feel the air is fresh as if it came from the mountain stream.  It is an enjoyable memory of our trip to South Island, NZ the end of the magnificent Southern Alp.  At the end of the day, I was tired but happy.  Natural beauty is one of subjects I like to paint.  My heart used to hop when I hold a finished painting of the place in my hands.  Probably just because I love to escape the boring world and into day dreaming!

EN PLEIN AIR PAINTING 16/1/2015

Coming to Wenderholm, I realised I had forgotten my glasses.  I had not had water either.  I went around to see whether I could get a bottle of water somewhere but the only place was away so I had to walk.  One problem solved.  Another, well!, I have to paint without glasses.  Monet, the painter with one trouble eye, gave me the courage.  I located the palette where my eyes could see colours, same with the paper!
The attractive white waves could only meant one thing. wind, a lot of wind.  I love the cool wind from the ocean in hot summer days but it means I sat down and held tight to the board.  I tried to photo the painting with the scene from where I sat but the wind kept blowing it away.  After a dozen times, I gave up and stood up holding the board on one hand against the landscape and photo it with the other.  Here is the photos.

THE OLD STONES OF CORNWALL PARK, Watercolor Painting Landscape, Auckland, New Zealand

I like the quirky look of the building.  The positioning of the big old tree on the high ground summarizes the philosophy of the park designer.  It looks like the hobbit dwelling.  It was a nice day in the park.  I did a sketch then rough in the colors, tree foliage and stones.  I was a bit terrified even at the thought but I did that before.  Jumping in with a wet brush then figure that out.  It was a good experience!  I threw a few more stones with moss on them to make them look original in the foreground and to strengthen the composition!  Must say I finished details of the stones in mid ground at home, giving time to a cup of tea!

Standing in the magnificent park that was created and donated to the city of Auckland by Sir John Logan Campbell.  A Scotsman who chose to live poor so the country he loved can live rich.  These old stones remind me of the Stone of Scotland.  Through my outdoor paintings in the park, I came to know a great person, John Logan Campbell and the culture he came from.  I know Sir Campbell is just an individual.  I know I only touch a leaf in the forest, the forest of Scotland.

HUA LODGE, Watercolor Painting Landscape, Auckland, New Zealand

It took two en plein air sessions for this painting.  I love quirky cottages, the bold chimney, the dragon scales on the roof, a little princess window with balcony caught my eyes.  Later I learnt the history of the lodge...

Like Acacia cottage, Hua lodge was created by Sir John Logan Campbell.  With great vision, he was able to use business skills to create great assets to the city and the country from a very humble beginning!

ACACIA COTTAGE, Watercolor Painting Landscape, Auckland, New Zealand

The simple charm of yester year in the wood, the cottage nested in the landscape of the Cornwall Park enjoys the morning sun.  I managed to capture few activities of passer-by and a few birds.  It was an enjoyable en plein air painting experience!.. later I learnt a bit about the cottage and the original owner...
Acacia cottage was built in 1841 by Sir John Logan Campbell, a Scotsman, and his business partner William Brown.  Sir John offered the occupation of the cottage to William Brown and his wife, while he lived and slept in a tent!  Sir John Logan Campbell later became major of Auckland.  He died unmarried but happy because he gave the park and the lot to the city!  I personally think he had always married to NZ!.  The cottage was originally situated off Shortland Street.  In 1920, the cottage was removed and re-sited in Cornwall park.  It is now the oldest wooden home in Auckland.

LUNCH BREAK AT THE VILLAGE, Watercolor Painting Landscapes, Auckland, New Zealand

A lunch hour in the village was painted to depict the life style of the village.  In main city it would be called the "Rush Hour" when every body has to hurry up or miss the lunch.  The more flexible life style of the village holds its appeal to everyone from new born to retired.  I tried to paint the village atmosphere that enhances the accommodating and compromising life style where everybody feels belong.

A MORNING IN THE WOODS, Watercolor Painting Landscapes, Auckland, New Zealand

I love the feeling of being in the forest with great old trees.  While we were painting, a walker came and sat with a dog.  He picked up a stick and threw to get the dog playing.  But the dog refused.  Dogs were not allowed in the woods.  The dog owner called the dog to come to him.  The dog did not come.  It went to the edge of the woods and started calling!  The dog loves the woods so much that it calls out loud “ Woof! Woof!... I want to go into the woods!”.  I think that’s what I heard.  Among mature NZ natives of Dingle Dell is a beautiful cabbage tree.  The green leave curtains of willow trees give great light effect.  It's another enjoyable en plein air experience!

HOME and GARDEN, Watercolor Painting Landscapes, Auckland, New Zealand

One of the characters of the village is a mix of architecture homes.  This painting was started outdoor and finished at home.  Sitting on the green of St Heliers rise, one of a scenic area of the village, I do a careful sketch and made notes of details of textures.  I painted as much on site as I could.  Fine details were added at home when memories were still fresh!

WALKING THE DOG (1), Watercolor Painting Landscapes, Auckland, New Zealand

Walking the dog is a popular activity in the village.  The old houses and slightly overgrown garden, parks and beaches were main features of the suburb.  I painted the scene to record the lifestyle of the village, peace and harmony.

St HELIERS VILLAGE (2), Watercolor Painting Landscapes, Auckland, New Zealand

Another view of the village, another aspect of outdoor painting!.  It a semi outdoor.  I stood up and made a sketch on site and go home to finish it.  There were a lot of noise, traffic and by walkers.  Sometimes I had to sit down and wait for the bus and trucks to go away then stood up and refocused.  It was also a fantastic day for a no rush coffee at this sea front village.  So I made a lot of observations while enjoying the drink as an excuse for half done the job!

THE SEA LULLABY, Watercolor Painting Seascapes

This scene in the creek of Waiheke Island caught my eye with its sense of intimacy between boat lovers and the sea, a place that even a seal would dream to be.  With that note of imagination and a simple natural tone palette, I captured the air, the light and the romance of the scene.  The place that is so peaceful and made perfect with a lullaby from the sea, a quiet night.  The place is waken up with the sound of the morning light touches the sea!  With this painting I felt like I have been had the privilege living in the boat house and watching the sunrise for 20 years!.. Imagine that!

LOW TIDE, Watercolor Painting Landscapes, Waiheke Island, Auckland, New Zealand

The glow of the evening lingered on the south side of Waiheke Island, Auckland, made the shore of Okahuiti Creek look even warmer.  The boats owners might have packed up for the day.  New Zealand is a place where many sailors and boat makers made their name in the world stage.  The sea and the boat create a unique life style.  I tried to capture the life style of NZ boaties, not what people do but what it feels like living with a boat what it feels like to grow up with a boat in a small place.  It's a nice feel.  Love the lazy look of these little boats, the fun time I've never had!

THE RED SHED, Watercolor Painting Landscape

In the world of small sheds in New Zealand, probably this is the most famous red shed.  She is the heritage of the town.  Inside her is the history of Glenorchy.  Glenorchy is a small settlement at the northern end of Lake Wakatipu in the South Island region of Otago, New Zealand.  Surrounded with lovely foliage, In front of her is the lake behind is the mountains.  The heritage of this place is millions mouth watering views!  It's the look of love!  Just look! She's the Red Riding Hood!
I have painted 9 paintings of this charming village where many major film production took place.

MOUNT ALFRED, Watercolor Painting Landscape

Like seeing a big Teddy standing in an enormous play yard waiting for me, Mt Alfred big and bold in deep soft blue made me feel like having a friend on the walk.  The schist stone dry, flat under my feet, the foliage soft and pure, the sky was clear and the blues were very seductive!  It was one of the best walks I had.  These were the thoughts that hold my hand during the painting process capturing the spirit of the place with colours, forms and textures..  I like that gigantic big blue (Alfred) Teddy a lot.  One day I spotted the Glenorchy schist stones in a garden centre nearby.  They look like the toe print or finger print of Alfred, my Teddy!  I realized he was always with me, in my thought.  Mt Alfred gave me an unforgettable walk and that was fun!

COTTAGE IN THE FIELD, Watercolor Painting Landscape

Among mountains, forest and fields is a place called home.  Charming like a princess, this cottage caught my eyes.  And here she is!  Isn't that lovely!  I love the natural light balance in this striking setting and the same time embracing the rural, rugged, magnificent and charming features of the place!  I wonder what would people think when all these were painted to depict the beauty of a simple life!

WALK WITH NATURE, Watercolor Painting Landscape

This schist stone path is full of interesting contrast of natural colors, rich and exciting.  These elements stimulate conversation and initiate relationship, a passage into life with positive mind.  The fresh and clean environment of the path have an image of a 5 stars plus resort, offering an easy stroll.  Hope you enjoy the walk!
