NZ BELLBIRD, Watercolor Painting and Drawing Birds

Olive green and red eyes make the bird look like it has something relate to theater . These birds sing during the day but more in the early morning and late evening.   Bellbird song consists of three distinct sounds similar to the sound of chiming bells.   Beautiful and delightful sounds, maybe that' the reason for the name "Bellbird".  First wash was on the general shape of the bird.  then I focused on the eye with initial orange then crimson red.  Then I moved on to the body.  After the body I moved back to add depth and highlight on the eye.  It was a run around marathon.  Then I left it to dry.  When I looked back at the painting, I had a bit of a startle.  The eye looked straight at me.  I felt like to hold the bird in my hand!  The eye haunted me for days!

KINGFISHER, Watercolor Painting and Drawing Birds

King fishers are often sighted near water.  If the weather was not too good, they would be in gardens looking for worms.  They are quiet and solemn like a king soldier guarding the palace.  I think their long straight beak was helpful for them to aim at a target.  Once they decided to take a direction, there's no return.  With a speed of a flying arrow they dive down and return with the catch.  They are very proud showing me the worm catching technique.  With a little beady eyes they can spot a movement of a worm under the lawn and catch it with 100% accuracy..   I used to watch them with amazement..I think they know that!

GOLDFINCH, Watercolor Painting and Drawing Birds

How do I stick my brush in painting birds?  I got captured by the birds.  That's how.  It's a painter story.  I must admit I had never planned to be painting birds.  By chance, I live in the area that has been developing conservation for birds.  The birds came to me and I fell for them.  I practically live with birds everyday.  Years a go, I was given a book, a very old book of Eric Ennion, the master and founder of bird conservation in England.  With the book and the birds, paper, colors and a brush in my hand I capture them.  I got hooked, just like that.  Then I started to play with them.  Every summer,  I had a lot of fun with the goldfinch.  They came to the garden to have a feed on flowers seeds.  It was joy to watch them... I notice every time I paint a bird I feel happy.. like a bird!

In the forests there were shadows
Shadow and shadow everywhere
Empty, wet, dark, sorrow
There someone looks
A beady eye
A tentative look

Some one cares
Someone smaller
Much smaller
Tiny
Just tiny
But cares
Take a walk in the forest

FLAME ROBIN, Watercolor Painting and Drawing Birds

The Flame Robin

I remember a young soldier
He was too young to be
He did know what war is
He just followed the lead
He was pushed into the fire

Fantastic Original Fine Art, watercolor on paper, Available for Purchase

Lost the friend
Lost the dream
Lost the love of his life
The flame died
There came a robin
On the road side
Open his chest wide
And sang to the soldier
A welcome song
It put the flame of courage
The flame of life
Back into his mind
And made him smile
He realized
He’d still always have

The flame inside

EASTERN YELLOW ROBIN, Watercolor Painting Drawing Birds

The Eastern Yellow Robin

I hear her in the wood across the way
The bird with yellow breast and cloak blue gray
She sings at dawn and in the evening late
And her song the local lyrebird imitate.

Beautiful Original Fine Art, watercolor on paper, Available for purchase

The yellow robin her familiar name
And for woodland dweller she seems very tame
Whilst most other wood birds out of sight disappear
The yellow robin lets you get quite near.

It is a simple tune she has to play
And twep twep twep is all she has to say
You hear her once you know that voice again
The song with you till next time will remain.

She sits on branch or sometimes cling to tree
Scanning the ground if insects she might see
And on silent wings she pounces on her prey
The yellow breasted bird with cloak blue gray.

She builds her cup shaped nest on fork of tree
With brown spotted green eggs two or sometimes three
And in the evening late and dawn of day
I hear her in the wood across the way.

FARM YARD PARTY, Watercolor Painting Farm Animals, Chicken

The third paintings of the bold stroke style fulfilled my thirst of visualizing and reconciling with my memories, my dream to play and have fun in the farm.  The fun that I could have never had if I had not started the series.  Looking at the finished painting, memories flooded back and hold me in the farm yard dream for a while, a farm yard party.  I might have been the hen wondering what on earth going on in the back!

FARM YARD LUNCH, Watercolor Painting Farm Animals, Chicken

When I was a young child, just by chance, I got to know the chicken, holding them, stroking them gently and felt the warmth under their feathers.  These feelings got into my memories.  The golden brown hens were my favorite.  They seem to be the best mum!  The thought of painting them terrified me.  However, as usual, I closed my eyes and decided to jump in.  "At least I try" I thought to myself.  I paint and I paint imagining the day I felt their body in my arm..  when I finished, I was surprised with my own picture!  That childhood memory has never gone away!

FARM YARD BREAKFAST, Watercolor Painting Farm Animals

Delightful free range chicken in the yard. Love, life and laughter.. set them free and you can
enjoy them more. Nothing more lively and exciting than the expression of the animals in the natural world!
I used bold brush strokes to capture the lively and direct interaction of these chicken, actually I should say hens and rooster because these animals, by the look of it, do take their favorite partner seriously!

PASSAGE ROCK VINEYARD, Watercolor Painting Landscape

There are 27 vineyards on this tiny island with a surface area of 92 km2 and a population of  8,730 permanent residents.  The island is only 17.7 km from Auckland city.  I seem to always have a variety of views to paint.  I cover multiple subjects because I am surrounded with truly beautiful scenes,  That's my excuse to paint this boutique stunning vineyard to note the love of wine of the island.  Feel the heat I used the high key contrast to depict the New Zealand summer on the island.  Later I discovered this vineyard by the sea is a hidden local gem!

THE SEA LULLABY, Watercolor Painting Seascapes

This scene in the creek of Waiheke Island caught my eye with its sense of intimacy between boat lovers and the sea, a place that even a seal would dream to be.  With that note of imagination and a simple natural tone palette, I captured the air, the light and the romance of the scene.  The place that is so peaceful and made perfect with a lullaby from the sea, a quiet night.  The place is waken up with the sound of the morning light touches the sea!  With this painting I felt like I have been had the privilege living in the boat house and watching the sunrise for 20 years!.. Imagine that!

LOW TIDE, Watercolor Painting Landscapes, Waiheke Island, Auckland, New Zealand

The glow of the evening lingered on the south side of Waiheke Island, Auckland, made the shore of Okahuiti Creek look even warmer.  The boats owners might have packed up for the day.  New Zealand is a place where many sailors and boat makers made their name in the world stage.  The sea and the boat create a unique life style.  I tried to capture the life style of NZ boaties, not what people do but what it feels like living with a boat what it feels like to grow up with a boat in a small place.  It's a nice feel.  Love the lazy look of these little boats, the fun time I've never had!

THE PRINCESS and HER CARRIAGE, Pen Watercolor Painting Drawing Figure

Technology has changed the face of the earth.  This scene is just came out of my imagination.  It's Cinderella party!  The pumpkin carriage will take her to the party she deserves.  To me, Cinderella does exist in modern world.  She is the kind hands that pull someone out of trouble.  Simple thing like a pumpkin in the garden... we tend to forget.. I created this image to remind myself something .. that would always stay as part of the fabric of human life regardless of the enormous pace of science, technology advance..

CORN FIELD PRINCESS, Pen Watercolor Painting Drawing Figure Fine Art

Another work from imagination.  Every summer, fresh corns are my favorite treat.  As I peel the leaves off, the corn seed made my eyes glow.  I thought it was a childish thing.  It will go away with time but it did not.  So I did this drawing and painting right out of my head as part of the confession that I love corn!  the look and the taste ignite my imagination...Somewhere in the corn field, there's a princess.  When she came, the corns line up and bow to her.  The birds flap around to greet her!  She's the Corn Field Princess!

I used the floral colors for this picture.  The classic roses that stand as an icon for an era were the idea for choosing colors.  The colors that just sink into memories, beautiful memories.  I also used blues to indicate the positive mind, manner and attitude of a remarkable generation!  Hope the beauty of hard work and dedication .. will inspire!

RED BLOSSOM FOREVER, Pen and Watercolor Drawing and Painting Figure FineArt

I had an old red blossom in the garden.  It has sharp thorns.  I like the tree when it sheds leaves and has flowers.  Where I grew up I had never had a chance to live with anything green.  Let's alone a garden.  A red blossom tree is definitely out of reach.  Thank to the love of gardening of the local I got one at last.  To understand the love of the red blossom in many cultures, I used to put my head into the tree to feel the buzz of the blossom.  I grew fond of it. Every time when I pull my head out of the tree, there were millions of kisses in the air.  Then I look at the flowers they were lipstick red.  They look like the kisses!!  Love is in the air!  You might have noticed the air is always fresher in the garden!!

THE RARE ORCHID, Pen and Watercolor Drawing, Painting Figure, Fineart

I used to admire the beauty of the orchid in the garden center.  I always wish to spend an eternity to look at them but it was not possible.  This admiration went into my subconsciousness One day I sat with a piece of drawing paper then I set go.  With my mind I drew with a pen and a brush because I wanted the fine, crisp details that can only be created by non- eraser-rubbed surface and the ink or watercolor.  I wanted the fine sophisticated details and I wanted a tone of them without muddling them up.  I wanted to retain the delicate and freshness of an orchid.  A touch of the pen or the brush.. it's final.  No adjustment! no rubbing! no going back!  I kept going for hours until I felt I needed to stop... I think this describe the technique given to me by the "Rare Orchid".... Enjoy
