KINGFISHER, Watercolor Painting and Drawing Birds

King fishers are often sighted near water.  If the weather was not too good, they would be in gardens looking for worms.  They are quiet and solemn like a king soldier guarding the palace.  I think their long straight beak was helpful for them to aim at a target.  Once they decided to take a direction, there's no return.  With a speed of a flying arrow they dive down and return with the catch.  They are very proud showing me the worm catching technique.  With a little beady eyes they can spot a movement of a worm under the lawn and catch it with 100% accuracy..   I used to watch them with amazement..I think they know that!

GOLDFINCH, Watercolor Painting and Drawing Birds

How do I stick my brush in painting birds?  I got captured by the birds.  That's how.  It's a painter story.  I must admit I had never planned to be painting birds.  By chance, I live in the area that has been developing conservation for birds.  The birds came to me and I fell for them.  I practically live with birds everyday.  Years a go, I was given a book, a very old book of Eric Ennion, the master and founder of bird conservation in England.  With the book and the birds, paper, colors and a brush in my hand I capture them.  I got hooked, just like that.  Then I started to play with them.  Every summer,  I had a lot of fun with the goldfinch.  They came to the garden to have a feed on flowers seeds.  It was joy to watch them... I notice every time I paint a bird I feel happy.. like a bird!

NZ ROBIN, Watercolor Painting and Drawing Birds

New Zealand Robin

In the forests there were shadows
Shadow and shadow everywhere
Empty, wet, dark, sorrow
There someone looks
A beady eye
A tentative look

Amazing Watercolor Fine Art, SOLD

Some one cares
Someone smaller
Much smaller
Tiny
Just tiny
But cares
Take a walk in the forest
There's always
Something there

Refresh the soul!

FLAME ROBIN, Watercolor Painting and Drawing Birds

The Flame Robin

I remember a young soldier
He was too young to be
He did know what war is
He just followed the lead
He was pushed into the fire

Fantastic Original Fine Art, watercolor on paper, Available for Purchase

Lost the friend
Lost the dream
Lost the love of his life
The flame died
There came a robin
On the road side
Open his chest wide
And sang to the soldier
A welcome song
It put the flame of courage
The flame of life
Back into his mind
And made him smile
He realized
He’d still always have

The flame inside

EASTERN YELLOW ROBIN, Watercolor Painting Drawing Birds

The Eastern Yellow Robin

I hear her in the wood across the way
The bird with yellow breast and cloak blue gray
She sings at dawn and in the evening late
And her song the local lyrebird imitate.

Beautiful Original Fine Art, watercolor on paper, Available for purchase

The yellow robin her familiar name
And for woodland dweller she seems very tame
Whilst most other wood birds out of sight disappear
The yellow robin lets you get quite near.

It is a simple tune she has to play
And twep twep twep is all she has to say
You hear her once you know that voice again
The song with you till next time will remain.

She sits on branch or sometimes cling to tree
Scanning the ground if insects she might see
And on silent wings she pounces on her prey
The yellow breasted bird with cloak blue gray.

She builds her cup shaped nest on fork of tree
With brown spotted green eggs two or sometimes three
And in the evening late and dawn of day
I hear her in the wood across the way.

FARM YARD PARTY, Watercolor Painting Farm Animals, Chicken

The third paintings of the bold stroke style fulfilled my thirst of visualizing and reconciling with my memories, my dream to play and have fun in the farm.  The fun that I could have never had if I had not started the series.  Looking at the finished painting, memories flooded back and hold me in the farm yard dream for a while, a farm yard party.  I might have been the hen wondering what on earth going on in the back!

FARM YARD LUNCH, Watercolor Painting Farm Animals, Chicken

When I was a young child, just by chance, I got to know the chicken, holding them, stroking them gently and felt the warmth under their feathers.  These feelings got into my memories.  The golden brown hens were my favorite.  They seem to be the best mum!  The thought of painting them terrified me.  However, as usual, I closed my eyes and decided to jump in.  "At least I try" I thought to myself.  I paint and I paint imagining the day I felt their body in my arm..  when I finished, I was surprised with my own picture!  That childhood memory has never gone away!

Delightful free range chicken in the yard. Love, life and laughter.. set them free and you can
enjoy them more. Nothing more lively and exciting than the expression of the animals in the natural world!
I used bold brush strokes to capture the lively and direct interaction of these chicken, actually I should say hens and rooster because these animals, by the look of it, do take their favorite partner seriously!

PASSAGE ROCK VINEYARD, Watercolor Painting Landscape

There are 27 vineyards on this tiny island with a surface area of 92 km2 and a population of  8,730 permanent residents.  The island is only 17.7 km from Auckland city.  I seem to always have a variety of views to paint.  I cover multiple subjects because I am surrounded with truly beautiful scenes,  That's my excuse to paint this boutique stunning vineyard to note the love of wine of the island.  Feel the heat I used the high key contrast to depict the New Zealand summer on the island.  Later I discovered this vineyard by the sea is a hidden local gem!

THE SEA LULLABY, Watercolor Painting Seascapes

This scene in the creek of Waiheke Island caught my eye with its sense of intimacy between boat lovers and the sea, a place that even a seal would dream to be.  With that note of imagination and a simple natural tone palette, I captured the air, the light and the romance of the scene.  The place that is so peaceful and made perfect with a lullaby from the sea, a quiet night.  The place is waken up with the sound of the morning light touches the sea!  With this painting I felt like I have been had the privilege living in the boat house and watching the sunrise for 20 years!.. Imagine that!

LOW TIDE, Watercolor Painting Landscapes, Waiheke Island, Auckland, New Zealand

The glow of the evening lingered on the south side of Waiheke Island, Auckland, made the shore of Okahuiti Creek look even warmer.  The boats owners might have packed up for the day.  New Zealand is a place where many sailors and boat makers made their name in the world stage.  The sea and the boat create a unique life style.  I tried to capture the life style of NZ boaties, not what people do but what it feels like living with a boat what it feels like to grow up with a boat in a small place.  It's a nice feel.  Love the lazy look of these little boats, the fun time I've never had!

THE PRINCESS and HER CARRIAGE, Pen Watercolor Painting Drawing Figure

Technology has changed the face of the earth.  This scene is just came out of my imagination.  It's Cinderella party!  The pumpkin carriage will take her to the party she deserves.  To me, Cinderella does exist in modern world.  She is the kind hands that pull someone out of trouble.  Simple thing like a pumpkin in the garden... we tend to forget.. I created this image to remind myself something .. that would always stay as part of the fabric of human life regardless of the enormous pace of science, technology advance..

Another work from imagination.  Every summer, fresh corns are my favorite treat.  As I peel the leaves off, the corn seed made my eyes glow.  I thought it was a childish thing.  It will go away with time but it did not.  So I did this drawing and painting right out of my head as part of the confession that I love corn!  the look and the taste ignite my imagination...Somewhere in the corn field, there's a princess.  When she came, the corns line up and bow to her.  The birds flap around to greet her!  She's the Corn Field Princess!

RED BLOSSOM FOREVER, Pen and Watercolor Drawing and Painting Figure FineArt

I had an old red blossom in the garden.  It has sharp thorns.  I like the tree when it sheds leaves and has flowers.  Where I grew up I had never had a chance to live with anything green.  Let's alone a garden.  A red blossom tree is definitely out of reach.  Thank to the love of gardening of the local I got one at last.  To understand the love of the red blossom in many cultures, I used to put my head into the tree to feel the buzz of the blossom.  I grew fond of it. Every time when I pull my head out of the tree, there were millions of kisses in the air.  Then I look at the flowers they were lipstick red.  They look like the kisses!!  Love is in the air!  You might have noticed the air is always fresher in the garden!!

THE RARE ORCHID, Pen and Watercolor Drawing, Painting Figure, Fineart

I used to admire the beauty of the orchid in the garden center.  I always wish to spend an eternity to look at them but it was not possible.  This admiration went into my subconsciousness One day I sat with a piece of drawing paper then I set go.  With my mind I drew with a pen and a brush because I wanted the fine, crisp details that can only be created by non- eraser-rubbed surface and the ink or watercolor.  I wanted the fine sophisticated details and I wanted a tone of them without muddling them up.  I wanted to retain the delicate and freshness of an orchid.  A touch of the pen or the brush.. it's final.  No adjustment! no rubbing! no going back!  I kept going for hours until I felt I needed to stop... I think this describe the technique given to me by the "Rare Orchid".... Enjoy

MOUNT ALFRED, Watercolor Painting Landscape

Like seeing a big Teddy standing in an enormous play yard waiting for me, Mt Alfred big and bold in deep soft blue made me feel like having a friend on the walk.  The schist stone dry, flat under my feet, the foliage soft and pure, the sky was clear and the blues were very seductive!  It was one of the best walks I had.  These were the thoughts that hold my hand during the painting process capturing the spirit of the place with colours, forms and textures..  I like that gigantic big blue (Alfred) Teddy a lot.  One day I spotted the Glenorchy schist stones in a garden centre nearby.  They look like the toe print or finger print of Alfred, my Teddy!  I realized he was always with me, in my thought.  Mt Alfred gave me an unforgettable walk and that was fun!

QUIET WATER, Watercolor Painting Landscape

The seat inside the inland lagoon offers magic silence, not a sound, only the heart beats.  Feel the air, paint the air.  The serene atmosphere of the place was the challenge.  I starred at the sketch, stopped and breathed and imagined several time before jumping into the painting process.  I came out relieved and happy!  I painted the air!  The moment to have and to hold!  The moment of heart and soul!

BIRDWATCHER HUT, Watercolor Painting Landscapes

This marsh land by the sea is the favorite place for birds.  Because it is near the sea, we have a mix of shore birds, sea birds, swam bird and ducks.  I was terrified, overwhelmed and excited with Comoran on the tree, blue birds near the water, relaxing ducks and wonderful mix of foliage.  Excitement gave me the energy for the painting process.  At the end I was exhausted but happy because I was probably more ambitious than I should for an outdoor direct painting.  I think there many things in life just happened then when you gain consciousness you would ask "How the hell did this happened?"  I asked myself several times but NOT telling anyone because they would not understand it.  I hope some painters out there would.  Soon after this painting was done.  The hut was removed.  The birds became very friendly to people, there was no need for the hut.  The birds love to interact with people, especially children.  The painting became the record for the place!.  I just love the tone of the painting.  It is so soothing like the feel of the duck in the water!

MORNING WALK, Watercolor Painting Landscape

Every time I walk here I admire this view and wish to paint it.  One day we went outdoor painting.  The weather suddenly changed and we had to retreat to plan B which was going to this site.  Leaning against the garden fence, I work quickly.  The painting was finished quickly.  I was glad that was a fun exciting and productive day.  We had plenty of chat and a cuppa of hot coffee!  The wish came true!  It was a happy day!  Magic!

MORNING BY THE STREAM, Watercolor Painting Landscape

Magical moment by the stream, if I were a duck this would be my paradise!  The drooping branches and hanging slender leaves old willow trees along the stream form magnificent curtains.  The trees created structures of a fairy tale palace.  Add to these were the reflective light bouncing of the water...  floating on the water were some sleepy ducks .. further away were a few blue birds!  time flew my mind flew too.. when I finished and show the painting to the group.  It was a pleasant surprise!  Everybody like it too but I did not say I was dreaming to be a duck!  with yellow and blue I thought of Monsieur Van Gogh too!

GARDEN TOWARD THE SEA, Watercolor Painting Landscapes

I always love a simple garden with sea view and here it is in front of me. Soothing blue green tone and light came from the harbor source of positive energy.  Walking strolling in greenery has become the local way of enjoyment of life.  Some just can't live without it.  That's including me!  Deep dark powerful green is a popular feature of New Zealand landscape especially the North Island where the climate is warmer.  I tried to capture the feel and local features while xhatting away.  Outdoor painting like this is a treat.

VENICE GONDOLAS (1), Postcards Watercolor Painting Venice, Italy

The gondolas were designed for riders to have fun with the sea.  Guests do not have to wait for the waves.  The shape of the gondolas with skilled boat men can offer any type of waves to please the visitors.  The sea was waiting at the door of the hotel room...  After a ride, I guest the night would be filled with dreams from the sea!  Once again, it was a fun and challenging painting process!  One can easily sweep the scene with monotone moody colors.  But I wanted the scene with tone, atmospheric.. excitement and passion!  It was tough!  I wonder who would not wanted the same thing when hitting the scene like this in Venice! Enjoy!

GONDOLAS AND THE PRINCESS WINDOW, Postcards Watercolor Painting Venice

I love this painting because I always love fancy features on old buildings.  They gave a hint of the presence of a little princess somewhere.  It was a notion of dream.  I love the window above the waiting gondolas.  It was a bit like the story of Cinderella with the pumpkin carriage hence, the title the picture.  I like the little bridge too.  I added two little figures to complete the romance scene of the place

MORNING IN VENICE WITH GONDOLAS, Postcards Watercolor Painting Venice

I tried to balance the mood and atmospheric of Venice and deep vibration colors of the scene.  I gazed at the organic feel of Venice water, the feature and the architecture of old building, the rich texture of the old brick wall and their reflection onto the deep water.  The pair of gondolas moored cozily close together in front of the three star hotel, Lisnona, toward the open sea echoed the romance of the place.  It was an intense painting process.  Finally, I got to enjoy the treat of the finishing touch, a few strokes on the wall of the hotel to note the brick work!.

MORNING BY THE MARSH LAND, Watercolor Painting Landscape

Natural flowering flax bushes lined the grass path,  the soothing green blend in with house at the water edge bordering the main city.  The city center was marked with the sky tower, an elegant focal.  I love them all. The mesmerizing effect of blue and green was captured with impressionist technique.  I added the neighbor boat to mark a dream!

MORNING FRESH, Watercolor Painting Landscape

Looking at the ducks enjoying themselves in this mud marshland in a warm clear morning, I wanted to be a duck!  If other members of the group were not there, I would probably not doing any painting at all.  Blue birds and all sort of ducks in a relaxing mode are very interesting.  I used a technique I had when painting other paintings with live animals.  First sit and watch until they get into my head.  I told them to stay there while I worked on the composition!  It's how lively and interactive outdoor painting can be.  It was mind boggling but it was fun!

AUTUMN BY THE POND,Watercolor Painting Landscape, Garden

After struggling with the traffic, I came late for this outdoor painting.  It was my first time trying to paint at the duck pond in the city domain.  The more I looked the more I was puzzled with the scene.  Plucked up the courage I junped right in.  After capturing a few ducks, ten in all.  Pew!!  It was not that hard!  I must have the ducks implanted my head!  The autumn tree made me think of Monsier Monet with his lily pond.  I had a feel of what the light in the pond did to his painting.

Plein air painting at the shore, the incoming light toward us made the scene rather soothing and appealing.  In this situation I like to use the palette that is close to nature with impressionist technique to capture the mesmerizing effect of this natural tranquil scene.

TOWARD THE SEA, Watercolor Painting Landscape

Various shade of green and a bit of impressionist technique were used to depict the feel of this tranquil reserve.  Green foliage and a few blue birds at my feet created a sense of peace, just quiet and beautiful!  another wonderful day with my outdoor painting gear.  I thought of Monet and his Lily pond that was so special that the French government built an Oval museum hall for it.  I went home with a lots of thoughts and a plan of more painting of the marsh land!

Chicken Yard (3), Watercolor Painting Farm Animals

How did I jump in as a terrified painter and came out as a hysterically happy one?  It's a miracle!  I did not believe in miracle myself but I could not explain it any other way.  These three chicken paintings were the first in my life!  I painted every other thing but never a chicken yard.  Their characters, forms, colors and liveliness terrify me.  Looking at the paintings I am happy but more terrified than before because I could not explain how.  It was the most exhilarating painting process.  It gave me confidence and courage!  That's what I meant "We do receive a lot more from the animals!"  I realized they help me to understand one mystery in the art world that Good Art comes from Love!

Chicken Yard (2), Watercolor Painting Farm Animals

More chicken with the same technique!  I now have the whole chicken farm in my head.  I love to see the natural world in the animals.  It was such a happy scene!  I hope by exhibiting their charm and beauty in art people might like to have the enjoyment of their company and hopefully farming practice would change a little bit.  We do receive a lot from these animals.  Set them free then we will receive a lot more, the understanding of nature and relationship is priceless.  They remind me how simple a perfect life could be!

Chicken Yard (1), Watercolor Painting Farm Animals

One day I plucked the courage to paint free hand the scene that I thought impossible, the chicken yard! The thought of capturing characters, interaction, liveliness of a group of chicken using the most challenging medium like watercolor frightened me.  I kept the idea for a long time until one day I decided to give it a go.  If I failed then I would know my limit.  I jumped in with a big juicy brush and kept moving the brush non stop.  Here it is!  Painting number 1 of a terrified painter.  Pew!  the result was terrific!  Better than I though...  I am moving to number 2...  Confidence with the chicken was a reward!

QUIET WATER AUCKLAND HARBOR, Watercolor Painting Cities, Towns, Villages

Time for another outdoor painting,  time to synchronize with natural elements in nature.  It's the morning at a quiet harbor in the city while everyone else heading to work.  I sat and sip in the atmosphere and set to paint.  Love the way sky and clouds were brought down on to water surface.  It made the boats float in heaven!  A moment like this I think it's heaven on earth!  I feel lucky!
